Ingredients:
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Extra sugar for the caramel (about 1/4 cup)
Chocolate drops or edible food pens for the eyes
Instructions:
Make the Caramel:
In a saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of sugar over medium heat until it becomes golden brown.
Pour the caramel into the bottoms of the molds you'll use for shaping your puddings. Make sure the molds are safe for both cooking and setting in the fridge.
Prepare the Pudding Mixture:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Cook the Pudding:
Pour the pudding mixture into the molds, over the caramel.
Place the molds in a larger baking dish and pour hot water into the baking dish until it comes halfway up the sides of the molds.
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until the pudding is set but still slightly wobbly in the center.
Cool and Unmold:
Let the puddings cool to room temperature, then refrigerate them for at least 2-3 hours.
To unmold, run a knife around the edges of the pudding and flip the mold onto a plate.
Add Cute Features:
Once unmolded, use chocolate drops or an edible food pen to make the eyes or other features to give your pudding character.
Serve:
Serve chilled. Enjoy your cute and tasty Japanese-style purin!
Remember, the key to the cute appearance is the mold. You'd want to find animal-shaped molds that can be used for baking and setting the pudding. And be gentle when adding the facial details, so you keep the smooth surface of the purin intact.
